AI Mention Tracking: How to Monitor Your Brand Across AI Search

The behavior of search has evolved much quicker than the majority of marketing teams have been able to keep up with. The average consumer no longer searches Google and clicks on one of the top 10 blue links. Instead, consumers are turning to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and even Google’s AI Overview for an answer, and the response comes complete with specific brands – but no clicks are being sent back to any website. You become invisible at the point of purchase decision when your brand isn’t part of the response.

That is the problem that AI tracking solves. It involves the process of tracking how, where, and how many times AI platforms make mention of your brand, so that you can know your visibility just like you have been tracking keyword rankings or backlinks.

What Is AI Mention Tracking?

AI Mention Tracking involves the systematic process of monitoring to see whether any large language models and AI-powered search engines make references to your brand while people are asking relevant questions. It should be noted that this is not just any brand mentioned. A ChatGPT brand monitoring approach looks specifically at what happens inside an AI-generated answer: whether the model names your company, cites your website as a source, recommends your product over a competitor's, or describes you in a way that is accurate and favorable.

This is important because an AI system could mention its competitor without linking to its website, or even reference your article without recommending your product. An effective tracking process should be able to differentiate between these three aspects and not consider them all to be the same figure.

AI mention tracking sits inside a broader discipline usually called generative engine optimization, or GEO. While the original SEO was focused on getting into the list of ten search results, the new focus is on getting included in the few sources that a model cites while answering a query.

Why This Matters Right Now

The scale of this shift is hard to overstate. ChatGPT alone had crossed 900 million weekly users by February 2026, and Google's AI Mode has passed one billion monthly users. Consumer behavior is shifting to match. According to Similarweb's 2026 Generative AI Brand Visibility Index, roughly 35 percent of US consumers now use AI tools at the product discovery stage, compared with only 13.6 percent who still start with a traditional search bar.

This switch also offers an obvious economic advantage. Citing behaviors within the platforms usually cluster rather than distribute evenly. Within Google AI Overviews, the top five industries comprise around 38 percent of citations, while the top ten constitute more than 50 percent. In the same study, a quarter of the brands examined received zero citations within the Google AI Overviews. Essentially, a few select brands are taking the lion’s share of visibility, while many others aren’t even making an appearance.

If you are not actively watching for your brand's presence inside these answers, you have no way of knowing which group you are in.

The proper process for tracking an AI mention is more than just checking to see if your name is there. Some of the important metrics are:

Mention rate. How often your brand shows up across a defined set of prompts relevant to your category. This is often described as your mention rate, and it is the starting point for everything else.

Share of voice. What percentage of total brand mentions in a topic area belong to you versus your competitors. The basic formula is your brand's citations divided by total brand citations, multiplied by 100.

Citation and source influence. Which specific pages or domains the AI is pulling from when it mentions you, so you know what is actually driving your visibility.

Sentiment and accuracy. Whether the AI describes your brand favorably and correctly, or whether it is repeating outdated pricing, discontinued products, or inaccurate claims.

Position and prominence. Where your brand lands in the answer. Being the first name mentioned carries more weight than being buried in a list of five competitors.

Trend over time. A single snapshot tells you almost nothing. The real value comes from watching how your share of voice and rank move week over week as you make changes to your content and site structure.

How to Track Mentions Manually

You don’t even need to purchase paid software to start. The basic form of AI mention tracking is the manual prompt test:

  1. Create a list of 20 to 50 actual questions that your consumers may have, written just like humans type or say them, not keyword phrases.

  2. Enter each prompt into ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews.

  3. Make notes of whether your brand is mentioned, whether it’s linked to, how it’s described, and which of your competitors are included in the results.

  4. Keep doing it regularly since answers will change each week, depending on the model update and new indexing.

The manual process will be good enough for a small company checking out the field, but it will not scale at all when you’ll be analyzing dozens of prompts on five AI platforms and several competitors.

Tools for AI Mention Tracking at Scale

An increasingly popular type of software has emerged to facilitate this task. These platforms typically rely on allowing you to create a database of prompts similar to actual customer queries and then having these prompts run through various AI engines on a consistent basis and reporting on things such as mentions, citations, sentiment analysis, and competitor benchmarking.

Some of the more established options include:

  • Otterly AI, which tracks brand mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode, and calculates share of AI voice against competitors.

  • Peec AI, focused on daily prompt-level monitoring and large-scale citation research.

  • Profound, aimed at enterprise-level answer engine intelligence.

  • Ahrefs Brand Radar, useful for teams that want AI visibility tied into a broader SEO workflow.

  • Semrush, a good fit for teams already using it for traditional search and wanting to layer AI visibility on top.

  • AthenaHQ, which tracks mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Grok, and connects visibility data to content gap analysis.

Pricing across this category commonly starts in the range of $29 to $49 a month for entry-level plans, with enterprise tiers scaling based on prompt volume and reporting depth. When comparing tools, look closely at which AI engines each one actually covers, since coverage varies and some tools focus heavily on ChatGPT while others spread across five or more platforms.

Turning Tracking Into Action

Monitoring mentions is only useful if it leads to changes. A few practices consistently show up in research on what improves AI visibility:

Lead with direct answers. Research analyzing 10,000 real-world queries found that pages using structured lists, quotes, and statistics had 30 to 40 percent higher visibility in AI responses than pages that buried the answer under paragraphs of context.

Keep paragraphs short. AI systems tend to extract two to three sentence blocks more easily than long, dense paragraphs, since they are looking for content they can pull out cleanly.

Fix inaccuracies fast. If your tracking turns up outdated information, wrong pricing, or a discontinued product being described as current, correct the source content as soon as possible. Models pull from what is publicly available, so outdated or inaccurate information tends to persist until you fix it at the source.

Earn topical authority. As most AI engines usually reference just two to seven domains per query, it’s better to focus on becoming an authoritative source on the topics that really matter to your customers rather than ranking on everything.

Also follow the competition. While monitoring your mentions is important, it doesn’t give the whole picture since it helps identify where you lose out to your competitors and what the reason behind that is.

The Bottom Line

AI search is not something on the periphery anymore. With hundreds of millions of people seeking advice from AI systems every single week, any brand that doesn’t know what it looks like in the answers provided by the technology is effectively operating in the dark. AI mention tracking provides the very same insight into the generative algorithms that rank tracking provided into traditional search back in 2026.
